12 Singapore Layover Facts
Short answer. A free cinema that never closes, a butterfly garden past passport control, and a forty-metre waterfall inside the terminal building. Changi is the rare airport where the layover is a reason to book the routing rather than a cost of it. Twelve things that surprise people, and what each one changes about your plan.
1. There is a free cinema, and it never closes
Terminal 3, transit side, beside the Ambassador Transit Hotel. Around fifty seats, screenings 24 hours a day, and no charge. Anyone who has spent four hours at a gate somewhere else will understand why this appears first.
2. The butterfly garden was the first in any airport
It is in Terminal 3, past security, with more than a thousand tropical butterflies and a waterfall grotto. Three other terminals have gardens of their own: cactus in Terminal 1, sunflowers overlooking the runway in Terminal 2, and Steel In Bloom in Terminal 4. All four are free and all four are airside, which makes them the answer for a connection too short to leave.
3. The airport runs its own city tours, for nothing
Two and a half hours, free, daily, including weekends and public holidays. You need between 5.5 and 24 hours between flights and your bags checked through. Register at the booths in Terminal 2 or Terminal 3 transit, Level 2, between 08:00 and 19:00, and report 90 minutes before departure. Four routes run: Heritage and Culture at 10:00, City Sights at 12:00, the Singapore River and Marina Bay Sands at 13:00, and Sentosa Discovery at 15:00.
4. The waterfall in the terminal is the tallest indoor one anywhere
The Rain Vortex at Jewel falls forty metres to the basement, through the middle of a glass dome. It runs 10:00 to 22:00, and a light and music showcase plays at 19:30, 20:00 and 21:00, with a fourth show at 22:00 on Fridays, weekends and public holiday eves.
5. Jewel is landside, which catches almost everybody
It connects to the Terminal 1 arrival hall on Level 1 and is a five to ten minute walk from Terminals 2 and 3. None of that helps a passenger in the transit area: reaching it means clearing immigration, then clearing security again on the way back. 6. Terminal 4 is a bus ride, not a walk
There is no Skytrain to Terminal 4 and no walking route from the transit area. The free shuttle takes about nineteen minutes from Terminal 1 and twelve from Terminal 2 or 3, running every five to nine minutes between 06:00 and midnight. If you land and depart from different terminals, that transfer is real time.
7. Two of the best things in the city are free and start at a fixed minute
Spectra plays over the water at the Marina Bay Sands Event Plaza at 20:00 and 21:00 Sunday to Thursday, with a third show at 22:00 on Friday and Saturday. Garden Rhapsody plays at the Supertree Grove at 19:45 and 20:45 every night. Both are free, both last about fifteen minutes, and both are cancelled by rain.
8. December gets three times the rain of February
331.9 millimetres against 105.1, across nineteen rain days against nine. The temperature barely moves — the mean daily maximum runs between 30.5 and 32.4 °C all year — so the month you connect in changes the rain and almost nothing else. The month-by-month page has the whole table.
9. Some passports get a 96-hour transit facility
The Visa Free Transit Facility covers nationals of the CIS, Georgia, India, Turkmenistan and Ukraine, plus selected Chinese passport holders. You need an onward air, ferry or cruise ticket within 96 hours and a valid pass for one of eight named countries. It is a route into the city for travellers who assume they have none.
10. The arrival card is free, and people pay for it anyway
The SG Arrival Card costs nothing and takes a few minutes. The immigration authority states on its own site that it does not support or endorse the commercial services that offer to file it for a fee. Submit it yourself, within three days of arriving.

11. One tour is priced by the car, not by the head
Almost every product here charges per person. One charges $165 for the whole vehicle, up to three travellers. For a couple, that is cheaper than two per-person fares on several of the alternatives, and it is the kind of arithmetic a price-sorted grid hides rather than shows.
12. The Skytrain runs later than the trains into town
The Skytrain between Terminals 1, 2 and 3 runs from 05:00 to 02:00, on both the public and the transit sides. The last MRT into the city leaves at 23:18. That gap is the reason an evening window in town almost always comes back by road, and why a private car is doing the whole return leg rather than half of it.
13. The city's driest month is not the coolest one
February is the driest at 105.1 millimetres, and December is the coolest by daily maximum at 30.5 °C. April is the hottest at 32.4. The spread between the hottest and coolest month is under two degrees, which is why the rain, not the temperature, decides what a window can do. September is the second-driest and is the other good month for anything on foot.
14. The hawker centres are the cheapest good meal on the route
A plate at Lau Pa Sat, Maxwell Food Centre or Tekka Centre costs a few dollars and arrives in minutes, which is exactly what a connection needs. Every driver in the city will steer you to one, and the evening tour builds a dinner stop into its own route.
