Planning a Singapore Layover

A connection through Changi is not a visit to Singapore until three things line up: you are allowed out of the terminal, you have the hours, and something is open when you get there. Work through them in that order and the rest is straightforward.

Leaving Changi: the three-step version

Follow the signs for Arrivals the moment you are off the aircraft. That is the whole trick, and it is where people lose the day: arrivals and the transit area are separate halls with a passport counter between them, and the move is one-way. One operator warns in capital letters that a passenger who ends up in departures will not then be allowed out of the airport for their tour.

Then immigration. Most passports enter Singapore without a visa for a short visit. Travellers who normally need one may be able to use the 96-hour Visa Free Transit Facility instead, which covers nationals of the CIS, Georgia, India, Turkmenistan and Ukraine and selected Chinese passport holders, provided they hold an onward air, ferry or cruise ticket inside 96 hours and a valid pass for Australia, Canada, Germany, Japan, New Zealand, Switzerland, the United Kingdom or the United States.

Then the arrival card. Everyone entering submits the SG Arrival Card within three days of arriving, including the day itself. It is free, and the immigration authority says plainly that it does not endorse the paid services offering to file it for you. Passengers who stay in the transit area are exempt, because they never seek clearance at all.

What it costs to get into the city and back

Three ways in, three different sums. The train is the benchmark everything else is measured against.

Two taxi runs plus fares between sights adds up quickly, and none of it includes anyone watching your departure time. That is the arithmetic that makes Singapore layover tour from airport competitive rather than extravagant: the route and the return leg are one price, and the window is sized to your actual connection. Paying for things

Singapore dollars, and less cash than you expect. Contactless bank cards and mobile wallets work on the MRT and the buses directly, with no separate ticket to buy, and cards are taken almost everywhere indoors. One walking operator states plainly that shops and restaurants will not accept US dollars or other currencies, and suggests around S$15 to S$20 a head for food and soft drinks — hawker centres are the one place where a small note is genuinely useful.

Your bags

If you are connecting on one ticket your hold bags are usually checked straight through, and you carry only what came into the cabin with you. Two of the driving operators ask how many bags you have before the day, because a boot full of suitcases may mean a larger vehicle and a surcharge. Changi has staffed left-baggage counters in the public areas if you would rather walk out with nothing at all.

What to wear in 31 degrees and 82 per cent humidity

Light clothes, and shoes you can walk several kilometres in. The mean daily maximum sits between 30.5 and 32.4 °C every month of the year and the mean humidity is around 82 per cent, rising above 90 before sunrise. One walking operator asks each traveller to carry at least a litre of water and an umbrella, because their tours continue in wet weather — and with 171 rain days a year, some of them will. Temples ask for covered shoulders and knees.

Wi-Fi, SIMs and staying reachable

Changi runs free Wi-Fi across the terminals and most drivers coordinate by messaging app, so the practical answer is to stay reachable rather than to buy anything. If you want data in the city, prepaid tourist SIMs are sold in the arrival halls, and an eSIM bought before you fly saves you the counter. Whatever you choose, send the operator your flight number and keep the booking thread open — that is how a late inbound gets absorbed instead of becoming a missed pickup.

Eating between flights

Hawker centres are the fastest good meal in the city and the one thing every guide will steer you to. Lau Pa Sat sits in the middle of the financial district and stays open late, and the night tour builds a dinner stop into its own route. Nothing here is a long sit-down: a plate arrives in minutes, which is exactly what a connection needs.

Getting back to the terminal

Work backwards, and be ruthless about it. Two hours before an international departure is the usual advice, and the drive from the city takes thirty minutes in ordinary traffic and longer in the evening peak. The last MRT towards town leaves at 23:18, which matters if you were planning to travel back by train after a late show. A private car removes the guesswork, because the driver is watching the same clock you are.

If something goes wrong

Tell the operator immediately, through the platform you booked on. A delayed inbound usually shortens a private tour rather than cancelling it, because the route is yours to set; a cancelled inbound is a refund if you are more than 24 hours out.
