Each district below carries the same four facts: what it is, how long it takes, what it charges and when it is worth going. Nothing here is more than forty minutes from the terminal, and almost all of it is free to walk.
The order is by time cost rather than by fame, because on a connection that is the number that decides. If you have one district in you, take one from the top.
The Malay-Arab quarter, built around the gold dome of the Sultan Mosque, with the painted shophouses and small bars of Haji Lane one street behind it. Everything worth seeing sits inside four streets, which is what makes it the district a narrow window can actually finish.
Go for the contrast: a mosque, a lane of independent shops, and a row of restored shophouses in colours nobody would paint a building today. It appears in four of the captured itineraries, usually paired with Little India.
Serangoon Road and the lanes running off it: the Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple, wet market stalls, gold shops and flower sellers stringing garlands on the pavement. It is the loudest district on this list and the one that photographs best in flat afternoon light, when everywhere else is washed out.
Sunday evening is when the district is fullest, which is either the reason to go or the reason not to. Either way, it is a short walk from a station and an easy stop to add to a driving route.
Five streets of restored shophouses around the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple, with a covered market and one of the city's best hawker centres inside the same few blocks. It appears in five of the captured itineraries, more than any other district, and there is a reason: it is the easiest place in Singapore to eat well in twenty minutes.
If you have six hours and want both a temple and a proper plate of food, this is the one district that gives you both without moving the car.
The waterfront the modern city was built around, with the lion-headed statue spouting into the water at the north end and the three towers of the hotel across the bay. It is the most-listed stop in the whole captured set and the one a first visit should not skip.
Go at dusk if the timing allows. The towers light, the skyline behind you comes on at the same time, and the promenade is a flat, shaded walk in a city where that is worth something.
St Andrew's Cathedral, City Hall, the National Gallery and the clock tower of Victoria Theatre, running downhill to Boat Quay and Clarke Quay along the water. This is the stretch the walking tours are built on, because the distances are short and the shade is better than anywhere else in the centre.
It is also the only part of the list where the buildings themselves are the point. Everything else here is a neighbourhood; this is architecture.
The Supertree Grove, two climate-controlled conservatories and a stretch of open garden along the bay. The outdoor gardens run 05:00 to 02:00 and cost nothing. The Flower Dome, Cloud Forest, OCBC Skyway and Supertree Observatory run 09:00 to 21:00 and are ticketed, with last admission at 20:00 for the Cloud Forest and 20:30 for the rest.
Garden Rhapsody, the free light show at Gardens by the Bay, plays at the Supertree Grove at 19:45 and 20:45 nightly. It lasts about a quarter of an hour and it is the reason the evening tour exists.
Three towers with a boat-shaped deck across the top, a mall underneath and the lotus-shaped ArtScience Museum beside it. The observation deck is ticketed; walking the Event Plaza is not.
Spectra, the free light and water show at Marina Bay Sands, plays over the water for fifteen minutes at 20:00 and 21:00 from Sunday to Thursday, with a third show at 22:00 on Friday and Saturday. You need no booking and no ticket — only to be standing there.
The glass dome attached to the airport, with a forty-metre indoor waterfall falling through the middle of it — the tallest anywhere. The Rain Vortex runs 10:00 to 22:00, and the light and music showcase plays at 19:30, 20:00 and 21:00, with a fourth show at 22:00 on Fridays, weekends and public holiday eves.
It connects straight into the Terminal 1 arrival hall and is a five to ten minute walk from Terminals 2 and 3. The catch is that it sits landside, so a transit passenger reaches it only by clearing immigration and then clearing security again.
The island off the south coast: Universal Studios, beaches, the cable car from Mount Faber and a boardwalk across from the mainland. It only fits a connection of twelve hours or more, and it eats the whole of one.
If you want a look without committing the day, Changi's own free tour runs a Sentosa Discovery route at 15:00.
